In partnership with Internews in Iraq, Waterkeepers Iraq successfully conducted a concise and impactful 4-day Environmental Journalism workshop in Sulaymaniyah from August 5-8, 2023. Under the expert guidance of Trainer Khaled Sulaiman, 20 aspiring journalists hailing from the Kurdistan Region embarked on a focused and transformative training journey. Throughout the training, participants delved deep into the core of environmental journalism, exploring environmental systems, the climate system, and actively engaging in practical exercises to identify critical environmental and climate challenges.
Additionally, they comprehensively examined the Paris Agreement, its objectives, and its alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals, while also conducting a review of international climate-related laws and agreements. The training's emphasis extended to Iraq's immediate challenges: society, economy, water, biodiversity, agriculture, and global health. Discussions encompassed the profound impact of climate change on marginalized communities and the integration of best practices in climate action. Lastly, participants honed their skills in information source verification for One Health exercises and workgroups, with a strong emphasis on solutions journalism for addressing environmental issues. These highly trained journalists are now fully equipped to take the lead in environmental journalism, poised to raise awareness and drive positive change in their communities and beyond.
